^^; this song always makes me think of Reese and Stardie. From his POV.
WARNING: SAP ALERT. MIGHT MAKE YOU GAG. XD
He is sitting on the railroad tracks leading out of FH, waiting for DotNA to track him down and get 'im, and just thinking about Stardie.
"Here. You'll freeze to death."
He dropped his jacket down around her shoulders. She glanced up at him, looking sort of embarrassed. Or maybe just uncomfortable. "Sorry. I didn't expect that it's like this in Esthar,"
He didn't say anything back.
"Uhm...Thanks."
"Hey Reese," she called and tossed him his flask at the second he glanced back. "Don't level me with those lowlifes,"
He smirked.
"...Can you hear me? Reese... wake up."
He opened his eyes slowly, gingerly. The pounding in his head was relentless. Had he just been hit with an Ultima? He had been strangling Gone...
As his vision cleared, the bright-haired form above him came into focus. He never noticed before--her eyes were almost as unusual as her hair. Violet...
"Just run faster and we'll get there!!"
The tile at her feet cracked and shattered and her upper body flailed forward as her legs gave out behind her. She fell face-first, barely breaking her fall with her palms.
He abandoned his cover and ran at her in dead sprint. In one fluid motion he slipped his arm between her chest and the marble floor and swept her up. He carried her a few more steps before diving down, her in tow, behind a large fountain.
He panted, sitting before her, his eyes frantically searching her body for the bullet he thought had caused her fall.
"It's okay. I'm fine,"
His gaze raised up to meet hers.
"Thank you...Ree--"
Both their heads snapped in the direction of the second round of raining bullets.
He collapsed into the lush, probably expensive chair, feeling understandably sick to his stomach.
“You shouldn’t have swallowed it.”
It didn't sound like a reprimand. In fact, she sounded kind of empathetic. He glanced up at her.
She came down the center aisle of the train, clunky black boots stomping along, her usual scowl fixed in place. She gave an annoyed sort of sigh and planted herself in the seat across the aisle from his.
"Hope you don't mind," she said quietly.
He glanced her way. She looked out her window.
"Hey, Pinkie!" He frowned, turning his head to get a look at the speaker. A table of loud drunkards guffawed obnoxiously.
"You should probably get outside with the others." he said to her quietly.
"You shut the hell up if you know what's good for you!" She barked right back at them, completely ignoring his advice.
"Hey!" she called out. "Where do you think you're going?"
"Wherever the fuck I want!" he shouted back, before turning back around and trudging ahead. Why the hell should she even care?
He leaned against the rail, and at that moment, the old piece of junk gave out.
"Oww!" she yelped, falling from her position on the bar down onto the asphalt. "Damn it... "
He extended a hand downward, to help her up.
"Sorry about that, if it was my fault..."
"No, it wasn't your fault," she mumbled, shooting him a frown. She grabbed his hand reluctantly and came to her feet. "It's the rail." She added sarcastically.
And it stung.
"I eat rocks. I enjoy it. They taste like chicken, did you know? But let me tell you, the best ones are the ones around the railroad tracks," he laughed sardonically.
"It's not funny." she said, her face this epitome of serious.
"It was a simple precaution." he continued. "So go on, poke fun, ridicule, all that jazz, I'm done arguing with you."
"You started it... " she mumbled. "I'm done arguing with you, too." she added bitingly.
Another laugh involuntarily escaped his throat. "You just have to get the last word, don't you?"
He stepped over to Stardust, removed his hat from his head, and dropped it right down on top of hers.
"Problem solved."
She looked upwards, the hat sliding down past her eyebrows and obstructing her vision. She was sort of cute, in her own rugged way.
"You and me are going to have a chat in the living room." he hissed, his grip hard around her wrist.
"Reese...! Oww... you're hurting me," he passed her a sideways glance just in time to see her wince.
He pulled her into the room and released her, glaring hard. Even though her violent outburst deserved a harsh reprimand, he felt a twinge of guilt at being so angry with her.
"Someone, please get me out of here...!"
Her voice. She was crying.
"C'mon Stardust!"
He grabbed her arms and hauled her to her feet. She was shaking, shrinking away from him, wanting to coil back up into her little ball. He pulled harder, and she fell against him, burying her head in his chest. He wrapped an arm around her, the flames licking at them all around.
“Are...are you going to laugh?”
Her voice was soft, her eyes puffy and still filled with the look of fear.
"Why would I laugh?"
It was the first time he'd ever seen her like this... vulnerable.
A cooling sensation filled his torso as her Guardian's healing spell took effect. An ache remained where his rib had been broken, but it was trivial.
"How is it?" she asked.
“Thought I’d find you here,” She sat down beside him. “I didn’t see you back at the hotel. Just wondering how you’re doing. You seem pretty cranky today.”
Cranky? A mild word for it.
"I'm fine," he said. He was anything, but.
"You're probably laughing on the inside." she remarked.
"No... " he replied softly. "Your father must have loved you very much... to give you a name like that. It's nice."
“You’re always so hard to figure out.”
He looked over at her, unable to mask the surprise that his eyes probably revealed.
"Hard? Heh... I feel like every time you look me in the eyes, you have me figured out." he replied quietly.
“This is the best spot to sit in this landing pad. Don’t sit over there." she pointed. “That rail is stupid.”
His mouth broke into a grin, and after another moment, he couldn't hold back a laugh.
"It's pretty hard to see the true beauty of life when everything inside is in shambles."
He looked down at her. She was always so strong on the field, what was it that had her in shambles? He always believed she wasn't all hostility and business on the inside, but he didn't want to believe that behind her hard exterior she was in pain.
"You know... there's something about you... " She was smiling. "... that's very... comforting. I've never heard anyone say that to me before. Thank you."
His eyebrows raised slightly. "Comforting?"
"You're so dramatic," she poked his cheek. "I didn't say you have an option. I'm letting you know."
He glanced over at her, lifting an eyebrow.
“Hey wait...!” she called, coming to her feet and jogging to catch up beside him. “What do you mean 'naive?' I know you’re not interested.” She crossed her arms indignantly. “I would’ve told you if you are, you know?”
She grunted. He smirked.
"I don’t really have a very complicated wish, I guess I just want to be happy."
"Why does my opinion mean anything to you, Stardust?" he asked impulsively.
He glanced between her lips and eyes as she answered.
“I feel comfortable whenever I’m with you... and... I know my opinion will always matter to you.”
She looked up at him, her smirk becoming a soft smile.
"Thanks, I always liked this." she said with a little laugh.
He smiled, taking the jacket off her arm. "Me too."
"Heh... " he smirked bitterly. "... come here."
His arms encased her.
Reese sighed, his head falling into his hands.
What have I done?
