Okay, so this is pointless. And okay, so he's dead.
WELL I DON'T SEE ANYTHING IN THE RULES ABOUT WRITING FANFICS ABOUT THE DECEASED. *rebellious @ teh STs* >(
Lawric looked over at Able and Signe, both on either side of him. Able stared at the asphalt, tears streaking and smearing through the dirt on his face. His older sister maintained her fire, glaring at the armed DotNA men standing before them. They all stood, bound and gagged, pressed up against the side of a large boxy vehicle and kept immobile at gun-point.
The woman with the dark red trench coat climbed out the back of the vehicle and tossed dark hair that gleamed red under the sun. She slid a gun from within her coat and held it loosely in one hand. She didn’t even glance their way as she passed in front of the three captives, her chin pushed out in a confident manner, heels clicking over the asphalt. He watched her circle around to the other side of the truck, out of their view.
"Thanks for making so much noise," he could hear her sneering tone. "You saved us the trouble of searching the village for you."
Searching the village for who?
He swallowed, finding it uncomfortable to breath with the gag partially closing his nasal passages. He blinked and glanced around uneasily, shifting his bound hands, raw wrists rubbing together.
"Which of you has the ruby?" she demanded.
"Don't worry, they'll tell us. Bring them out," Arland.
His eyes lifted immediately as the armed DotNA men in front of them advanced. He swallowed again and conceded to being forcefully grabbed around one arm. Signe and Able were given the same treatment, all of them ushered forth, rifles jabbing into their backs.
He emerged around the other side of the truck, stumbled slightly, and glared fiercely back at the DotNA man that pushed him.
“Keep walking.” the man muttered coldly, shoving him again.
He stumbled again, and turned around to face whoever or whatever they were being displayed before. His gaze locked on the scene before him, his blood running cold. He heard Signe emit a low heartbreaking moan into her gag, falling to her knees.
There were a lot of people standing in front of them, but Lawric only saw three.
Jaime. Deo. Vanesse.
Maybe it made him a fool, but for the entire duration of his captivity, he hoped at least they had managed to get away. He couldn’t remember anything between falling unconscious in that green gas in Dollet, and waking up in a cold cellar with Signe and Able. He had just assumed the three other Opps had made it out, that they had escaped capture.
Vanesse shouted out their names, and he met eyes with her. She looked so distraught. So pained. His gaze shifted to Jaime, who stood frozen, the look of a frightened doe in her eyes. Finally he looked at Deo, whose gaze flicked nervously from Arland to Waverly.
Why didn’t you guys escape… why didn’t you get away?!
In his heart, he knew the answer. None of them would ever leave each other behind.
"Now I know what is wrong with this picture!" Arland announced, bring the attention back to himself. "Am I or am I not seeing the Opps working side by side with the SeeDs?"
Lawric frowned slightly, actually looking at--for the first time--the people his friends were with.
"I have orders for you to take care of them and get ME the ruby!! I should've killed you all like worms in that… putrid prison cell!" he spat.
'Ruby?' 'Killed you all?' He’s… he’s threatening our lives… so he can use them.
Lawric glared at the back of Arland’s head from where he stood. He couldn’t remember ever having been filled with this kind of loathing. His hands were shaking, even within their binds. His jaw clenched around the gag, and he felt tears of pure frustration and hate welling up behind his eyes. You repulsive bastard…
"Arland, what's the meaning of this?" The pistol-toting woman demanded.
He tried to regulate his ragged breathing. Vaguely he felt Able shift at his side. Both of his captive friends were silently crying.
"Y-you see...." Arland stammered.
"But don't you want the ruby?!" Vanesse exclaimed. "Just chill! We'll give you the ruby if you would just stick to your promise."
He wished more than anything he could speak to them. Just go… just get away from this whole situation while you can.
"Do you honestly think he'll surrender your friends once you give him the Ruby?" a girl with curly hair and dark clothing spoke out at Vanesse. "He doesn't look like the chivalrous sort. And I don't think he's planning on staying loyal to the DotNA, either. I say kill the fat bastard and give these guys back their friends before they do something stupid... like try to give you the Ruby. We'll be keeping that."
Lawric’s head was spinning. He didn’t know anything about this ruby, and he was too distraught to really listen to all the subtleties of the conversation and connect the dots. His heart felt like it was being twisted, rung out like a dirty dishrag. He just wanted to be back in Balamb, back at their home, before any of this mess…
"I thought we had a deal!" Deo shouted angrily.
His despondent eyes snapped up to look at the bomber.
"Our deal was keeping you alive if you showed us the way to the ruby," one of the female SeeDs snarled. "you should be happy that we even agreed to that. Besides, Pol is right. They're not going to let us go free after we give them the ruby, so what's the point? You think they're just gonna let us walk out of here after the exchange?"
He looked back at Deo, his eyes filled with confusion and defeat. What are you doing, man? Just get Jaime and Van out of here.
"tch, like there's any other way out of this," that fiery girl appeared to ready herself for the coming fight.
Lawric’s gaze dropped to the asphalt.
"One move and we'll shoot them. There's no way you can win.”
The voices spoke around him, but he wasn’t listening anymore. Signe whimpered into her gag. He glanced over at Able, who was visibly shaking. “We locked down Shumi Village. There's nobody but our soldiers surrounding the entire place. You're not getting out of here alive… ”
"You three, kill the seeDs," Arland shouted tyrannically. "I told you to kill them or we'll kill your friends!!"
Lawric lifted his gaze up, glancing between each of his former companions. The people that had given his life a little bit of depth and meaning, where there was none before. The people that, together, comprised the place he called “home.”
And he had time for just a moment longer--for one more breath--before he lost it all.
I'll never forgive you Weiss.
